Professor David Megginson – engaging people through a best man’s speech led David to a career in Education

David was Emeritus Professor of HRD at Sheffield Hallam University, UK, and founder of the Coaching and Mentoring Research Unit in the Business School.
In 1992 he co-founded (with David Clutterbuck) the European Mentoring Centre which became the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC)
The EMCC exists to develop, promote, and set the expectation of best practice in mentoring, coaching, and supervision globally for the benefit of society. It now has10,000 + members across 26 Affiliated Countries/Regions and 85 countries (https://www.emccglobal.org/about_emcc/who_we_are/strategy-2/)
David was honoured to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards from Henley Business School, Coaching at Work journal & EMCC for his contributions to Mentoring & Coaching.
Lis Merrick, President of EMCC (UK) in 2016 commented
‘David’s contribution to the global coaching and mentoring community has been astounding. His incredible enthusiasm for people, love of learning and his joy of life are his most inspiring and infectious qualities. His ability to cut through the crap so rapidly is astonishing and his calm manner and dry sense of humour has supported me through many a self manufactured crisis’
Professor David Clutterbuck, co-founder of EMCC said
‘When David & I first met, it was an instant meeting of minds. In no time at all we were researching together and set up EMC, the forerunner to EMCC. When I look at the organisation the EMCC has become and at the great pile of co-authored books and papers we created together, I know that we owe David a great debt. I am grateful to this kind, generous soul for helping me develop academic rigour, for the fun we had together on so many projects and presentations but most of all for the friendship he has offered to me and many others’
Lise Lewis, International President of EMCC in 2016 reflected
‘Beneath David’s air of quiet and thoughtfulness is an extraordinarily insightful mind which has led him to challenge so much accepted wisdom’

The Greek philosopher, Plutarch said
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.”
In his 50 year career in Education, David kindled many thousands of fires.
